Look, I get it.
You’re a creative. The last thing you want is another productivity hack that promises to “revolutionize” your workflow but actually just adds more admin to your plate.
But what if I told you that the most powerful tool in my creative business coaching arsenal is embarrassingly simple? I’m talking 10 minutes a day simple.
I call it the Bookend Method.
Think about actual bookends for a second – those sturdy supports that keep your books upright and organized, even when the volumes between them are a beautiful mess of different sizes and styles.
That’s exactly what these two daily check-ins do for your workday. Like real bookends, they create solid structure at the start and finish, holding everything together even when the middle gets messy (because creative work is messy). Time-wise, they sit at the beginning and end of your day, literally “bookending” your work hours with purpose and clarity.
It’s this simple, potent structure that’s helped my creative clients double their output while actually feeling less overwhelmed.
Here’s the deal: Most creatives I work with (photographers, designers, artists, writers – you know who you are) resist structure. Because shouldn’t creativity flow freely? Shouldn’t we wait for inspiration to strike?
The reality is, structure actually sets your creativity free.
One of my clients, a fiber artist, put it perfectly: “It’s just like weaving. The rigid structure of the loom is exactly what allows for endless creative possibilities within it.”
Here’s how it works:
You “bookend” your workday with two 5-minute check-ins:
Morning Bookend (5 mins)
Evening Bookend (5 mins)
That’s it. Seriously.

Let me get personal for a second, because this isn’t just theory – it’s how I actually run my day.
My mornings are chaos (fellow non-morning people, I see you). I’m rushing around getting kids dressed and fed, saying goodbye to my husband, doing the school bus hustle, and finally grabbing my own breakfast and that non-negotiable cup of coffee.
Then I sit down at my desk, usually still in “mom mode” or “half-awake mode” (sometimes both). That’s where my morning bookend becomes my secret weapon. Those 5 minutes of structured check-in time literally help my brain transition from “where are your shoes?” to “let’s make some magic happen.”
The evening bookend? Just as crucial. Before I switch back to family mode, those 5 minutes of wrapping up – checking off completed tasks, organizing tomorrow’s priorities, cleaning up any loose notes – give me the mental freedom to be present with my kids when they get home. No more half-listening to their stories while mentally cataloging unfinished work tasks.
And this brings us to why the Bookend Method works so well specifically for creative entrepreneurs…
The power isn’t in the tasks themselves. It’s in what happens between the bookends.
When your brain knows everything is captured and organized, it stops playing that annoying “don’t forget about…” background track. Instead, it gives you permission to dive deep into your creative work.
Think about it: How many times have brilliant ideas been derailed because you suddenly remembered an unanswered email? Or a deadline you might be forgetting? Or that thing you were supposed to follow up on… wait, what was it again?
The Bookend Method eliminates that mental static. Everything has its place, everything gets checked, and your creative brain can finally breathe.
Here’s what’s wild: The more solid your bookends are, the more freely you can create between them.
As creative director, Doug Main shares in this article,
“ …working in a creative profession isn’t as simple as sitting around, mulling over ideas in a paint-splattered apron. In fact, thriving within the industry often requires discipline and boundaries…”
I think of it like building walls around a garden. Those walls don’t restrict the garden – they protect it. They create the safe space where wild, beautiful things can grow.
And the results speak for themselves. My clients who implement this system consistently report:
Now, you might be thinking: “But shouldn’t I do my creative work before checking email?”
Here’s my take: It depends on how your brain works.
Some of my clients absolutely need to create before they touch their inbox. For them, we schedule creative sprints before the morning bookend.
But for others (myself included), uncertainty is kryptonite to creativity. As someone who manages anxiety and likes to know what’s coming up, I’ve found that taking stock of overnight updates actually helps me create better.
Knowing what the day holds can actually free you to create better.
That being said, when I’m deep in a high-priority creative project – the kind that demands my full creative energy and focus – that’s when I flip to “create before consume.” On these days, I protect my creative space by diving straight into my work before anything else. My mind is completely at peace knowing I’m giving my absolute best hours to what matters most. It’s a powerful approach for those special projects that simply can’t wait.
For most days, though, knowing what the day holds actually frees me to create better.
Here’s the beautiful thing, though – nothing is set in stone. Your process can (and should!) flex with your needs and priorities.
There’s no “right” way – there’s just your way.
