Why Successful CEOs Skip Resolutions

Resolutions are wonderful… if they work for you! If you’re one of those people who can set a New Year’s resolution and stick to it, I’m genuinely cheering you on.

But for most of us?

Well, we’ve all seen how the packed January gym crowds thin out by March, leaving just a handful of dedicated newcomers among the regular faces.

The truth is, success in your creative business isn’t about that initial burst of motivation – it’s about consistency. It’s not about pushing hard for a few weeks in January or working in sporadic bursts throughout the year. It’s about showing up regularly, even when the initial excitement fades.

And while habit-building is powerful (quick tip: add Atomic Habits to your 2025 reading list!), the focus of this blog is to share something that really transforms creative businesses.

Instead of making business resolutions this year, I want to share the framework I’ve seen work time and time again with my creative clients who have transformed from overworked employees of their businesses into confident, successful CEOs.

Your CEO Roadmap: 4 Steps to Real Business Success

Step 1: Get Crystal Clear on Your Vision

Before you can lead your business, you need to know where you’re heading. This isn’t about vague goals like “make more money” or “find better clients.” It’s about creating a detailed vision of what success looks like for YOU and your creative business.

Remember, success isn’t a one-size-fits-all destination. Your vision should reflect:

  • Your core values and what matters most to you
  • The lifestyle you want your business to support
  • The impact you want to make with your work
  • What energizes you vs. what drains you
  • The non-negotiable boundaries you need to thrive

When you’re crystal clear on what success means for you, you’ll stop saying “yes” to things that look good on paper but don’t align with your bigger picture.

Step 2: Build Your Long-Term Strategy

Once you know where you’re going, you need a real plan to get there. This means moving beyond your Pinterest board of dream clients and creating actionable steps that will move you toward your vision.

Your strategy should include what matters most for YOUR creative business:

  • Your offer suite and how your services work together (because random offers won’t cut it!)
  • Revenue goals that actually add up (success isn’t magic, it’s math!)
  • Your ideal client and their complete journey with you
  • How you’ll get visible to your dream audience (aka your marketing approach)
  • What you need to grow (think: team, tools, or training) without burning out

Feeling a bit overwhelmed? That’s totally normal! If you’re not sure where to start, check out my complete guide to creating a basic business plan for creatives here. It breaks down the exact steps you need, no weird legal jargon or stressful paperwork required.

Your strategy doesn’t have to be perfect or fancy (unless that’s your style!). The key is having a plan that helps you make sure all the pieces of your business strategically fit together AND add up to the successful, sustainable, and PROFITABLE business you’re dreaming of.

Step 3: Create Systems That Scale

This is where the magic happens. Instead of working harder, the goal is to work smarter. The right-fit systems will help you deliver consistent results without burning out. They’re what separate successful creative businesses from those that stay stuck in the hustle.

Think of systems as your business’s autopilot – they keep things running smoothly even when you’re not actively managing every detail. This includes:

  • Client workflows that make your projects run like clockwork
  • Templates and processes that save you from reinventing the wheel
  • Time-saving tech and automations for those repetitive tasks eating up your day
  • Clear boundaries and policies that protect your energy and creativity

You don’t need ALL the systems at once. Start with what’s causing the biggest headaches in your business right now.

Step 4: Implement Strategic Rhythms

Rhythms are different from habits or resolutions – they’re recurring practices that keep your business flowing smoothly and moving forward. They’re what ensure you’re making consistent progress toward your goals, even during busy seasons.

Effective business rhythms include:

In fact, there are 8 rhythms I believe all businesses need! You can check them out here.

The key is finding rhythms that work for YOUR business and creative style. No need to force yourself into someone else’s schedule or copy what works for others. Your rhythms should support your vision while honoring how you work best.

Now, I bet I know what you’re thinking:

“This sounds great, but how do I actually make all of this happen without letting it fizzle out like my past resolutions?”

The secret? CEO Time.

What is CEO Time?

This is scheduled, non-negotiable time where you work ON your business, not IN it. It’s not about checking emails or updating your Instagram. It’s about implementing these four steps systematically, week by week.

Here’s how to start:

  1. Block out specific CEO Time in your calendar (yes, right now!)
  2. Protect this time like you would any client meeting or personal appointment
  3. Use it to work through each of these steps systematically

And yes, by scheduling CEO Time, you’re already starting to create a rhythm in your business! Consider it your head start on building a sustainable, successful creative business.
